Georgia Ports Authority’s silt suspension system in place at the Port of Savannah has not only reduced the demands of maintenance dredging, but has also been modified to increase oxygen levels in the Savannah River.
Consisting of 15 units online at Savannah’s Garden City Terminal, the computer-controlled system produces a low-velocity flow that works in tandem with passing tidal currents to keep water moving near the berth, resulting in reduced siltation.
Now, a newly-modified silt suspension unit also injects oxygen into the marine environment from May through October to protect aquatic life from lower oxygen levels.
Meanwhile, GPA, operator of the ports of Brunswick and Savannah, recorded 25.6% container growth in April, marking five consecutive months of double-digit growth through its ports.
