Japan provides aid for refurbishment of Namibe port

Jun 1, 2010 Port

Cooperation between Japan and Angola has made it possible to refurbish the port of Namibe with an investment of US$24 million, Euclid Infotech reported.

The director general of the port said that 120 metres of dock had been refurbished, of a total 240 metres earmarked for refurbishment.

He added that it would be necessary to continue investing in order to refurbish the total 874 metres of dock, enabling it to compete with other ports in the region.

As well as extending the dock, he said the company planned to build a container terminal and a second line terminal with a view to improving goods processing.

The port of Namibe, the third most important in the country, after Luanda and Lobito, processes around 200,000 tonnes of goods annually.
