May 27, 2010 Port

The first-quarter container traffic through the ports of Ukraine rose by 1.2 times from Q1, 2009, to 137,278 TEUs, the Ukraine Transport Ministry data said. Two ports, specializing in handling containerized cargo, Odessa and Illyichevsk, showed equal positive results, 1.2 times as much growth, RZD-Partner.Ru reports.

In the first quarter the country’s ports have handled half as much volume of inbound cargo as in Q1, 2009, 68.750 TEUs, and outbound volume rose by 8% - to 68.520 TEUs. These figures show a slight gain in imports over exports, versus prevailing exports volume common for the crisis period. This year, exports and imports almost equaled, signaling the recovery in imports segment.

There are two stevedores operating at Odessa port, CTC-Ukraine and Brooklyn-Kiev. The first company operating the port’s main terminal posted a 31-percent growth, 66.690 TEUs. The second one showed more than a twofold increase in handled volume over Q1, 2009, to 3,790 TEUs. A third stevedore, Metals-Ukraine, transshipped a little more than 2,000 TEUs.

The Ilyichevsk Port quarter throughput amounted to 66.790 TEUs, up 24.8% from Q1, 2009. This year 100% of freight traffic was handled by Illyichevsk port (in Q1, 2009 over 85% of overall volume was handled by UKRTRANSCONTAINER).
