Antwerp’s pollution drops, despite rise in industry

May 26, 2010 Port

Atmospheric pollutants in Antwerp harbour have dropped significantly over the last decade, according to recent figures.

Emissions per tonne in large-scale industry have been nearly halved in ten years despite production in the area growing by 10%.

Further, over a period of thirty years, production more than doubled while total emissions dropped by about two thirds.

The results came from a survey conducted by Dutch industry group Voka and the Antwerp-Waasland Chamber of Commerce which covered 1998 to 2008 and focussed on 31 of the largest industrial companies in the harbour area, including the petrochemical cluster.
