New DB Schenker terminal in Sofia commences operations

May 12, 2010 Port

A NEW DB Schenker logistics terminal 20 minutes from downtown Sofia is now fully operational, the German logistics giant has announced.

The Bulgarian logistics centre interconnects rail and road and has two private rail sidings. The EUR10 million (US$12.7 million) terminal at Bozhuriste is close to the international highway between Sofia and Belgrade.

It is a 3,000-square metre site with a 10-metre height, a 2,000-square metre cross-docking hall, both having 30 loading bays with hydraulic ramps.

The facility, with 3,500 square metres of office space, is equipped with state-of-the-art security and fire safety systems.

The two private 220-metre long railway sidings have ramps that enable five four-axle rail cars to be processed simultaneously, said the company that six cars can be loaded and unloaded on each siding track.

"We are relying increasingly on railports - terminals where we can implement intermodal solutions," said Elmar Wieland, chairman of the board of management, Schenker & Co AG in Vienna, responsible for south eastern European operations.

Said Schenker EOOD managing director Helmut Schweighofer: "Our Sofia site will open new business opportunities thanks to its location and equipment."
