SRI LANKA's main Port of Colombo this year logged its highest throughput of all time for March, recording a total 360,801 TEU in volume, up 21 per cent from March, 2009.
First quarter volume meanwhile was up 27.4 per cent year-on-year at 993,166 TEUs, the Colombo Daily News reported.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) attributed the figures to quality of service, as well as its on-going efforts to attract international container lines to its harbours.
Chief among the SLPA's business development initiatives are the numerous mega technological development projects currently underway to bring the country's ports in line with those of its neighbours. The sustained effort has already resulted in a 15.7 per cent increase in March volume for the Authority's harbours nationwide.
