Apr 14, 2010 Port

- The Chairman of DP World, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, has become the first person to step on new land created for London Gateway on the River Thames, the UK’s newest port and logistics development.

He inspected the first section of reclaimed land as part on a visit to see the £1.5bn (US$2.3bn) development get underway, which includes the key elements of dredging and reclamation.

Deepening the River Thames for the project will, once again, allow the world’s largest trading vessels to deliver goods to the heart of the UK consumer market, which is expected to save over 65m freight miles and 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

“Seeing the new ground is an excellent achievement for DP World and the London Gateway team. I’m very pleased to be able to stand on the land where the world’s largest cargo ships will once again visit London and bring goods straight into the heart of the UK markets.” Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

Simon Moore, CEO of London Gateway said that the project was progressing well and that it was on course to deliver an exceptional piece of infrastructure for the UK.

The port, which will be one of the most automated and efficient in the world, will add an additional 3.5m teu to the UK’s port capacity. The adjoining logistics park will offer over nine million square feet for the distribution, manufacturing and high-tech sectors.

DP World has invested in a major hi-tech scheme, unprecedented in scale, to ensure the dredging is carried out safely and responsibly, triggering one of the most comprehensive marine and wildlife monitoring projects ever recorded.
