Chennai Port posts 6% growth in cargo volumes

Apr 12, 2010 Port

Chennai Port Trust registered a 6.2 per cent growth in cargo handling for the year ending March 31, when it moved 61.06 million tonnes against 57.49 million tonnes the previous year, according to Euclid Infotech.

Last year, the port retained its No 1 position among the domestic car terminals by handling 273,000 cars. While Hyundai continues to be the biggest exporter of cars from the port, Ford India has also started export of its cars through the port from August. The port set an all time high record of handling 1.22 million TEUs as against 1.14 million in the previous year.

Increased handling of containers (in tonnage) and petroleum, oil and lubricants contributed to the growth and offset the drop in volume of iron ore, fertiliser and coal during the year.
