Fremantle receives its new crane

- The Port of Fremantle has received a new $12.5m ZPMC 65 tonnes, 50 metre outreach post-Panamax container crane for use by DP World in its container terminal at North Quay.

“This large crane is part of infrastructure upgrading to ensure that the Inner Harbour can efficiently cater for the larger container ships coming into Australian service,” said Fremantle Ports’ CEO, Chris Leatt-Hayter.

Over the past 15 years the port has seen the average size of container ships increasing by about 85%, which has resulted in the Inner Harbour deepening and berth project currently being undertaken to accommodate these larger ships. The first stage of dredging in the harbour, the entrance channel and the deepwater channel has already been completed.

Reconstruction of the 52-year-old Berth 10 on North Quay to enable it to handle larger container vessels is expected to be completed next month (May). Once operational it will add another 180 metres of berth and container handling capacity.

“This additional capacity will enable berth strengthening works to be undertaken progressively on container Berths 4 to 9 on North Quay, while maintaining shipping schedules. Work on strengthening Berth 9 has already begun,” said Leatt-Hayter.
