Cochin port employees seek ministry’s help for dredging

Apr 8, 2010 Port

Cochin Port Employees' Organisation (CPEO) has written to the Union Ministry of Shipping to make available the services of government-owned Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) to carry out capital dredging work in Kochi for the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT), the Hindu reported.

A memorandum submitted to the Union Shipping Secretary K Mohandas by the organisation said if a suitable dredger was spared by DCI, Kochi Port could complete the capital dredging work, to achieve 14.5-metre draft, in time for the commissioning of ICTT.

Unless capital dredging is completed before the onset of the rainy season, the Cochin Port Trust will not be in a position to measure the depth of the channel, which will result in huge additional liability for it, the memorandum said.
