Cost-cutting software for smaller terminals offered by Zebra

Apr 2, 2010 Port

OAKLAND's Zebra Enterprise Solutions (ZES), a division of Nasdaq-listed Zebra Technologies, has announced the launch of a new computer operating system for terminals moving less than 120,000 TEU a year.

Of the 1,099 terminals worldwide, 35 per cent move less than 120,000 TEU, according to industry media and maritime researchers, said Zebra.

"Small terminal operations are a critical part of the industry and make up a significant percentage of the global terminal industry, especially in emerging and niche regional markets," said ZES general manager Bill Walsh.

"Providing lower-volume terminals access to many of the same software tools and features that have allowed larger facilities worldwide to expand helps lay the foundation for the future growth of the industry," he said.

Navis Argo is the new terminal operating solution (TOS) that offers smaller terminals cost-effective access to enterprise-level software, eliminating the competitive disadvantage small operations typically face when compared to their larger counterparts, according to a company statement.

The new system records and reports terminal movements using a simple machine that is easy to use and affordable to maintain, said the company. The system includes features necessary for "all core operational planning and control requirements for vessel, yard and gate, integrated with equipment control, EDI management and reporting tools".

"We are excited about the benefits Navis Argo will offer smaller operations, and believe the tools and features will allow these terminals to grow and effectively compete in an ever-changing business landscape," said Mr Walsh.

Zebra serves more than 90 per cent of Fortune 500 companies worldwide said a company statement. For more information about Zebra's solutions visit http://www.zebra.com.
