APL's one-stop container freight station has opened at Port Qasim, Karachi, to provide consolidation, storage and cargo handling services which had been spread over three facilities.
By operating as regional hub, the new terminal is expected to deliver cost savings and improve transit time, most notably by allowing APL to streamline its trucking, customs brokerage and freight management capabilities, which should help vendors increase the efficiency and flexibility of their cargo management systems.
APL Logistics international chief Irfan Sheik said Port Qasim "offered a strategic advantage by leveraging APL's road transportation operations." Proximity to Karachi's key industrial zones, he added, such as the upcoming Textile City, "ideally positions APL Logistics to support the region's progressive trading initiative".
Controlled exclusively by APL, the terminal spans 35,000 square feet and can be expanded to up to 60,000 square feet in line with business demands.
The facility benefits from the latest modifications, such as dock-high flooring for faster container movement, advanced security systems and smart IT that increases inventory visibility and control. In addition to customised warehouse space, on-site accommodation will be provided for employees to ensure 24/7 operational continuity.
APL's Pakistan services currently include cargo consolidation, warehousing, documentation, quality-control and various value-added benefits.
