Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15, 2008, the Port of Detroit will welcome the ocean-going vessel, Federal Power to inaugurate the 2008 shipping season. The Federal Power, a Cyprus flagged vessel, is expected to arrive at 7:00 A.M. at the Nicholson Terminal & Dock Company. It will officially be the first ship to arrive at the Port of Detroit.
The port community is excited to get the 2008 shipping season underway. We are looking forward to the positive economic impact the Great Lakes shipping will have on Detroit and the entire region, said Steven Olinek, deputy director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA)
On March 30, 2008, the Federal Power set sail from Antwerp, Belgium with a cargo of steel products, under the command of Captain Dariusz R. Wolanski. The Federal Power is 450 feet long with a 76 foot beam. Limassol, Cyprus is its home port.
The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority was established in 1978. It is a non profit organization based in Detroit, whose mission is 'to promote commerce and enhance trade opportunities within the global marketplace through the Port of Detroit, by implementing creative economic development solutions and complement its governing units.' Funding for the Port Authority is provided by the State of Michigan, Wayne County and the City of Detroit.
