APM Terminals has invested US$176 million to upgrade the Apapa Container Terminal at Nigeria's Lagos Port Complex.

The bulk of investment at the APM-managed facility related to IT infrastructure development, manpower development, and the purchasing of new cargo handling equipment, the Lagos Daily Independent reports.

Chief among the purchases was the acquisition of a third Liebherr LHM 500 mobile harbour crane. Valued at $8 million, the new LHM 500 - scheduled to arrive by early-April - is expected to markedly enhance the terminal's operating capacity.

A number of rubber tyre gantry cranes was also introduced at the facility in March of this year, adding to the four STS cranes acquired during the first half of 2008.
