Construction of Thames estuary London Gateway deep-sea port begins

Mar 19, 2010 Port

CONSTRUCTION of a new port on the Thames Estuary is underway in what will be Britain's first new deep-sea facility in 25 years.

Terminal owner DP World told the London Times the port would be big enough to handle six of the world's biggest container vessels, and offer an annual capacity of 3.5 million containers, most of which would be hoisted over to the logistics park quayside.

The port is expected to remove 2,000 trucks a day from the roads, providing quick access to London. Today, most Asian cargo is first moved from Felixstowe to the West Midlands then trucked to London.

Chamber of Shipping manager Tim Reardon said by providing direct competition to Felixstowe, London Gateway would give shipping lines more options and provide greater efficiency.
