Windfall for port of Charleston

Mar 16, 2010 Port

Everything from mini-excavators to 40-ton dump trucks will arrive through the Port of Charleston before hitting the American market under a new partnership, according to the state of Columbia.

Mississippi-based Terex Construction recently relocated its import operations from Wilmington, North Carolina, to two locations at the Port of Charleston.

The local outfit will serve as the company's new point of entry into the United States.

Local logistics firm Neal Brothers will bring in equipment manufactured overseas and handle the predelivery inspection, according to Terex Construction marketing manager Hannah Tanata. The equipment ships then to Terex Construction's distribution centres from there.

"The Neal Brothers partnership is going to help us improve our operations in turning equipment faster and getting to distribution centres more quickly," Tanata said. "Their efficiency in processes is going to allow us to be better in ours."

She said some larger equipment will arrive as roll-on/roll-off cargo and others packed several pieces per shipping container. Terex Construction supplies everything from loaders to graders to mining equipment.
