Finnish ports face strike threat

Mar 4, 2010 Port

While Finnish passenger and goods traffic was set to resume today after unions struck a deal with employers, an agreement has yet to be reached with the nation's port workers.

The union accepted wage proposals for bus and truck transports and oil product deliveries, but is still in talks with employer representatives for stevedores. If talks fail, loading operations across Finnish ports could be halted at 0600 hrs tomorrow morning.

The length of protection against dismissal has proved the biggest sticking point in the talks; the union's position is that the protection should run a full year instead of the current six months.
