Liberia: Maritime Certificates 4 for Airport Fire Fighting

The Bureau of Maritime Affairs (BMA) yesterday certificated four airport personnel who underwent a refresher course in fire fighting and fire prevention in Monrovia.

The fire fighting drill that marked the first in the post war activities in the maritime industry of Liberia was a collaborative effort of the Roberts International Airport (RIA) and is one of the accomplishments under the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

 Presenting certificates to the fire fighters who presently serve in the aviation department at the RIA, Commissioner John Morlue said the bureau is not only interested in water and ship but also in fire fighting and seafaring.

The outgoing commissioner said fire prevention is very important for the job in the maritime industry as it is in any other discipline because it concerns land, air and sea and that it was his hope that the exercise broadens the training of more personnel at the level of the National Fire Service, National Port Authority and other agencies. 

Those who received the training certificates in the following courses with approval from the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in accordance with section A-VI/1-2 of the reversed STWC convention of 1995 were; Winston Dean, Jaycee Garniah, Peter Barning and John Blaah.

According to the training commandant of the Liberia Marine Training Institute, Captain Armett Hill, the refresher training was conducted during the early part of this year and such exercise has to be conducted every five years as an endorsement for fire fighting so that those specialized in that field are qualified to go back on sea.

Those who attended the ceremony held at the departure lounge on the RIA were the acting RIA Director, Bestman Pennoh, Human Resource Manager, Winston Beyslow, RIA Fire Chief, Louis Sando and the Chief of Security, Mr. Wright among other RIA staff.
