Yangon: The state-run Myanmar Port Authority (MPA) plans to privatise ports in Yagon as well as offer build-operate-transfer agreements to companies, according to local media.
Hutchison Port Holdings has run a terminal in Myanmar for a number of years. Beyond that though, the terminal situation in Myanmar is woefully underinvested.
Under new government guidelines this year much state owned infrastructure and industries is set for privatisation. A Reuters report, for instance, said that the Transport Ministry is also planning to transfer the country's only state-owned shipping line, Myanmar Five Star, to Myanmar Economic Holdings, a business enterprise under the control of the Defense Ministry. Since the beginning of this year, the government has privatized 246 state-owned gas stations and 110 factories. A number of hydro-power and mining projects have also been sold to private enterprises in recent months.
