Feb 25, 2010 Port

With the Korean car major, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), one of the country’s largest passenger car manufacturers, stepping up its export performance, Chennai Port is bracing itself for the possibility of handling record exports in the coming fiscal.

According to Exim News Service, the car giant has already achieved a milestone of sorts with a cumulative export of 10 lakh cars when it loaded its i20 hatchbacks to Australia from Chennai Port.

And during the calendar year, the Korean major plans to find 10 new markets, with Australia being the latest entrant to the list.

The first shipment to Australia was 500 units of i20s that was loaded on to the carrier Asian Emperor.

The Chairman of the Chennai Port Trust (ChPT), Capt. Subhash Kumar, said the Port would create more parking facilities for vehicles’ exports by demolishing the older buildings within the Port premises.

ChPT, he added, also proposed to ensure that the pollution level within its premises is brought down substantially, to maintain a cleaner environment for all car exporters.
