Rostock Seaport welcomes the rehabilitation of the railroad tracks between Rostock and Berlin

Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH emphatically welcomes the rehabilitation of the entire stretch of railroad tracks between Berlin and Rostock, which, according to the recent agreement reached between Minister for Transportation Schlotmann and DB Netz, is to be completed by the end of 2013. “DB Netz is finally acting on a long-standing request of the port to improve the condition of the train connection for passengers and cargo. This will improve the competitiveness of the port. Sustainable chances for the extension of the Trans-European Rail network from Berlin to Rostock as a starting point for ‘Motorways of the Sea’ will be created,” comments Ulrich Bauermeister, Managing Director of Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH.

The renovation of the train station in Warnemünde, one measure in the project that has been prioritized, will improve the accessibility and clearance possibilities in Warnemünde. From the perspective of the port, this is significant especially for the thousands of international cruise passengers who, year for year, visit Rostock, Mecklenburg and Berlin during their stop in Germany. Likewise, one of the results of this project is the resolution of the much criticized tunnel under the platforms. The connection between Warnemünde and the quay on the sea channel – important to many tourists – will be improved.

“The closure of the tracks between Rostock and Berlin from September 2012 to April 2013 is the price for the long-term improvement of the rail connection between the Hanseatic City of Rostock and the capital city, as well as the railway facilities in Warnemünde, but is worth it. The numerous international cruise shipping companies that have taken the cruise port Warnemünde into their cruise program will accept the completion date 2013 with gratification”, comments Ulrich Bauermeister.
