Total cargo turnover of the Big Port of St. Petersburg down 16% to 50.4 million tons in 2009

The Big Port of St. Petersburg authorities report a year-over-year 16% drop in volumes of transshipped cargoes in recent calendar year, at 50.4 million tones. According to the port’s numbers in 2009 1 million 343 thousand 675 TEUs of containers were shipped via the port, a 32,3% slump over 2008.

In these numbers, bulk cargo volume decreased by 20%, to 7 million 681 thousand tons, including 625 tons of ore, a 38% drop, of chemical fertilizers by 28%, to 4 million 464,5 thousand tons. Coal and coke transshipment showed a 9% rise (2.47 million tons) over 2008.

The port said, it had a 21% decline in transshipment of general cargoes, to 11 million 649.1 thousand tons, including 935.3 thousand tons of non-ferrous scrap (-50%), packaged unit loads down by 22%, to 710.4 tons, reefer cargoes at 2.752 million tons (-27%), other general cargoes down by 49 percent, at the cost of 1.367 million rubles. On the contrary, the volume of transshipment of ferrous metals grew by 2% - to 4.08 million tons, colored by 21% - to 1.8 million tons.

In recent year the port’s terminals transshipped 15.9 million tons of liquid bulk cargo (+5 percent), including oil products 15.88 million tons.

Ferry cargoes rose by 54% over 2008, or 275.8 thousand tons
 
The Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands of the delta of the Neva river, in the Neva Bay, the eastern tip of the Gulf of Finland. The Big Port of St. Petersburg territory includes the Neva River delta and the Neva Bay, Kronstadt and the dams structures. The Port of St. Petersburg has a fleet of Icebreakers piloting ships to the docks during winter navigation. The Authority says there are at least 30 stevedores currently operating in the port.
