Hebei provincial ports to exceed 500 million tonnes in 2009

THE northern province of Hebei is expected to see the throughput of its ports surpass 500 million tonnes and their aggregate capacity reach 470 million tonnes for the year of 2009, Xinhua reports.

According to Hebei Transportation Department vice director Yang Guohua, the province spent CNY7.77 billion (US$1.14 billion) in port construction in 2009, bringing six new berths with a capacity of 4.81 million tonnes.

By the end of 2009, Hebei has a total of 110 berths in operation, which are able to handle 470 million tonnes of cargo. Ninety-one of these berths have a capacity of more than 10,000 tonnes.

In 2010, Hebei plans to spend CNY7.9 billion on port facilities, including four new berths with a capacity of 8.4 million tonnes.
