With Australia out of recession, Sydney Ports’ container throughput at Port Botany continues to grow, with a further record monthly high of 181700 teus handled in November, an increase of 7.9% on the same period in 2008.
“Container trade figures for November 2009 show a combination of stronger exports and high demand for imported goods, which have helped us reach this significant milestone,” said Sydney Ports’ CEO, Grant Gilfillan.
November’s strong container performance has surpassed the previous record in October 2009, by 2.7% when trade at Port Botany’s two container terminals reached an all time high of 176,900 teus.
China contributed 30% of the total container trade in November, whilst increased export performance was driven by higher container transfers to other Australian ports (13.9%), Vietnam (117.3%), India (48.1%) andTaiwan (16.2%).
Higher throughput of full container imports has also been one of the main drivers in November, with business purchasing power significantly enhanced by the appreciation of Australian dollar exchange rate.
This growth comes at a time when Hutchison Port Holdings has been selected as the successful operator of the 3rd Terminal at Port Botany, which will double the handling capacity at the port.
