APM Terminals has announced it has chosen Shanghai as the regional headquarters for its Asia-Pacific region and has registered the company as APM Terminals Management (Shanghai) Co Ltd.
The decision is designed to place leaders closer to Chinese customers and strategic partners in the commercial and financial hub of China as well as streamline operations and reduce costs, said a company statement.
"We have strong relationships in Shanghai with our customers and strategic partners, such as Shanghai International Port Group and Zhenhua Port Machinery Company," said Martin Gaard Christiansen, CEO of APM Terminals Asia-Pacific region.
"Equally important, the Shanghai government has made significant efforts to attract leading multinational companies to place their regional offices here. We feel our new regional headquarters will enable us to build the APM Terminals brand in China and throughout Asia," said Mr Christiansen.
Having surpassed Germany as the world's largest exporter, and by some measures Japan as the world's second largest economy as of 2008, China is home to three of the world's top five containerports by volume, and seven of the Top 14; one out of every four TEUs of global container throughput is now handled at a Chinese port. APM Terminals has interests in eight facilities in China, with two in development, said a company statement.
The Asia-Pacific region plays an important role in APM Terminals' Global Terminal Network with ports in China: Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao, Shanghai, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Dachan Bay, Yantian; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia; Laem Chabang, Thailand; Cai Mep, Vietnam; Kobe and Yokohama, Japan.
