Port of Houston readies to take advantage of Panama expansion

Dec 17, 2009 Port

LAND development at the Port of Houston is picking up ahead of the Panama Canal expansion that will double the size of ships transiting its locks in 2014.

Until this time, much of the cargo must continue to be transferred to trucks or rail cars on the US west coast or travel via the Suez Canal to the east coast.

Although many of the warehouses on Highway 146 are built on spec and empty, Houston port operations director Jimmy Jamison believes land surrounding the port is attractive to retailers such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot who feed the Asia-goods demand.

"They're popping up every place. If they wait until the Panama Canal expansion, that property won't be there," he said, adding that spare capacity is likely to disappear once the canal opens.

Houston boosters say that the all-water route to their city is likely to mean that cargo that now goes to Texas alone
