Newcastle terminal increases coal capacity by 11 million tonnes

Nov 12, 2009 Port

Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) at the Port of Newcastle has increased its coal loading capacity by 11 million tonnes since the Kooragang terminal upgrade. The $458 million upgrade of the PWCS has lifted its coal loading capacity from 102 million tonnes per annum to 113 million tonnes.

“This increase in coal export capacity means the Hunter Valley coal industry has scope to increase export revenue by approximately $800 million a year,” says Joe Tripodi, NSW Minister for Ports and Waterways.

PWCS’ upgrade involved installing three new stackers, three new reclaimers and two more reclaimers will be replaced by mid-2010.
