Top terminal operator to implement SPARCS N4 at Greenfield facility

Zebra Enterprise Solutions, a division of Zebra Technologies Corporation, announced that one of the world’s top terminal operators will implement Navis™ SPARCS N4 at its modern, greenfield terminal in Callao, Peru, which is set to open a year ahead of schedule in early 2010.

DP World Callao’s multi-million dollar Muelle Sur terminal facility is located near the capital of Lima at the Port of Callao, which is the largest container port on the west coast of South America.  The new facility, set to open April 2010, will be a modern 650-meter-long quay terminal able to receive Super Post-Panamax vessels. Muelle Sur is one of nearly 40 terminals globally - 9 in the Americas - that have chosen to implement SPARCS N4.  An additional 15 potential SPARCS N4 customers are in the pipeline.

“We’re confident that the implementation of SPARCS N4 at the Muelle Sur terminal will help us create a state-of-the-art container terminal,” said Maciek Kwiatkowski, General Manager at DP World Callao.

The Muelle Sur terminal will have an annual capacity of about 850,000 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEU) in its first phase, and a maximum capacity of about 1.4 million TEU in the second phase of development. A twenty-foot equivalent container unit or TEU is a standard measure in intermodal transport.

“With SPARCS N4, we will eliminate a lot of potential paperwork,” said Luis Turbides, Terminal Manager at DP World Callao. “We’re also looking forward to using SPARCS N4 modules like business intelligence, which will help us make quicker decisions on the fly, and the groovy coding, which allows us to customize.”
DP World Callao will rely on the web-based SPARCS N4 operating system to govern the movement of all container logistics and operations from gate to yard to vessel and to offer users improved customer support, lower operating costs and increased stacking yard capacity. SPARCS N4 will provide the Muelle Sur terminal greater control over resources for operations to quickly and intelligently respond to changes or disruptions in the flow of cargo.

“SPARCS N4 was a good option for us,” said Jordi Sanmarti, IT Manager at DP World Callao.

“We very much look forward to utilizing the advanced features of this software to help create a productive and efficient operational environment at our Muelle Sur terminal.”

Bill Walsh, General Manager at Zebra Enterprise Solutions, believes SPARCS N4 will be a critical component in helping the Muelle Sur terminal deliver on its long-term growth plan.

“SPARCS N4’s unique combination of functional capabilities and built-in best practices will put the terminal on track to achieve its growth plan of improving its throughput to more than a million TEU per year,” Walsh said. “Our solution will help take the Muelle Sur terminal to its next level of success.”
