The private sector Gangavaram port on the East Coast (India), which began operations earlier this year, has handled over 10 million tonnes of cargo so far this fiscal, and is expected to cross the 15-million tonne mark by the end of 2009-10.
According to Exim News Service, the new port has managed to wean away the bulk of cargo of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, which was earlier exported by Vizag Port, because of its proximity to the plant.
Limestone and coking coal are also being imported through Gangavaram.
The steel plant authorities have found Gangavaram port very convenient and cost-effective.
