Volgo-Balt navigation to complete Nov. 15, 2009

Volgo-Balt navigation is planned to be over on November 15, 2009. As PortNews IAA learnt from the state basin authority (GBU), Volgo-Balt navigation can be prolonged in case of favourable weather conditions and orders.

As PortNews IAA informed earlier, within first five months of summer navigation 2009 (May-September incl.) about 4 mln tons of petroleum products has been delivered by river fleet ex Volgo-Balt system to Baltics (taking into account passing the boundaries of the Seaport of St.-Petersburg over the Neva) which is 10% more as compared to the corresponding period of 2008.

Volgo-Balt (Volga-Baltic waterway) is one of the most significant water routes comprising integrated deep-water system of inland waterways of Russia’s European part. It is a complex of engineering facilities uniting 4900 kilometers of operated waterways including 3270 kilometers with guaranteed dimensions, 11 locks with water lift from 11 to 18 meters, three water-power stations, 25 earth dikes and dams, 12 ferry crossings, 9 bridge crossings, 8 lighthouses in the Ladoga lake, over 5000 signs of navigation situation, 273 units of service fleet.
