Port of Gothenburg is one step closer to a new structure

Oct 9, 2009 Port

In the light of port development internationally, the Gothenburg City Executive Board reached a directional decision in spring 2009 to divide the Port of Gothenburg into a municipal Port Authority and three terminal companies, which would be run by external operators.

As a result, the Board of the Port of Gothenburg has just submitted a proposal for a new operating structure to its owner, the City of Gothenburg.

The final decision will rest with the City Council, and is expected at the beginning of November.

“The proposed structure is good for the Port of Gothenburg as we will gain access to external expertise and at the same time the port can focus on its strategy and develop as a freight hub for the whole of the Nordic region,” says Sven Hulterström, Chairman of the Port of Gothenburg.

There has already been interest in these developments externally, despite the fact that the project is still at the preparatory stage.

The new structure does not mean that the Port of Gothenburg is being sold, only freight handling operations. The external operators will purchase the right to use the quays and terminals at the port through concession agreements, whilst the Port of Gothenburg still retains ownership of the land and infrastructure.
