Britain's ports handled 246 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of the year, down 11 per cent from the 276 million tonnes moved in the same period of 2008.
Figures released by the Department for Transport show imports fell 12 per cent year on year, while exports were down 8.4 per cent.
Although their throughput also fell, the grouped ports of Grimsby and Immingham were the busiest in the period, handling 27 million tonnes.
