Sep 18, 2009 Port

VOLUMES continued to rise in August at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach month to month, but still left a big year-on-year gap in container throughput.

Los Angeles was six per cent up over July, and Long Beach's increased 13.8 per cent, the second rise in month-to-month results. But year on year, LA was off 19 per cent from August 2008 and Long Beach fell 21.7 per cent.

August was the best import month of 2009 for both ports with greater gains expected in September and October as the peak season rises and then falls towards the end of November.
