In the first half of 2009, there was a decline in the volume of goods transshipment at most of Poland's major ports, consistent with the trend from the second half of 2008. In the case of Szczecin and Swinoujscie, transshipment declined by 19% year on year in the firs half of 2009. In the case of Gdynia port, there was a decline of 21% year on year in the volume of goods transshipped in the first seven months of 2009. Meanwhile, Gdansk port was the only major port to record an increase in transshipment, of 1.5% year on year, during the first half of 2009. The main reasons for the fall in transshipment at Polish ports are less flexible VAT conditions than western European ports, limited transport infrastructure, and the economic downturn, Logistics Finland reported.
