Kandla Port remains No. 1 in cargo handling this fiscal till date, registering a throughput of 27.49 million tonnes in 132 days (April 1-August 10).
This is 0.76 million tonnes or 3 per cent more than the cargo handled in the corresponding period of 2008-09 (26.73 million tonnes).
According to Exim News Service, this was disclosed by Mr M. A. Bhas-karachar, Deputy Chairman of Kandla Port Trust (KPT), during a press conference in his office on Monday.
A key announcement he made during the meet was of re-starting the night navigation at the Port on trial basis, and on a regular basis from August 15. Night navigation had not been taking place for long due to some reason or the other.
Mr Bhaskarachar credited this important decision to the Chairman of KPT, Mr P. D. Vaghela, whose personal and active involvement was critical in getting it done.
He also disclosed that this year’s Independence Day would be celebrated by KPT in an innovative and unique manner, by inaugurating two parks and a 7,000-sq. metre godown having 25,200-tonne storage capacity to be developed at a cost of Rs 6.8 crore. KPT would also organise a tree planting function to increase the green cover in the area.
Three more godowns having the same capacity would be ready by December this year, the Deputy Chairman revealed.
