YANGPU, the main port of China's southernmost province of Hainan has posted 3.5 per cent year on year cargo growth in the first half to 12.28 million tonnes, representing a measure of economic recovery in the global downturn, reported Xinhua.
Tax revenue from the Yangpu Economic Development Zone hit CNY550.5million (US$80.4 million), an increase of 8.2 per cent during the same period, showing a bottoming out of the economy and showing promise of upward movement.
Yangpu volume is expected to reach 220 million tonnes by 2020, said the report, and there are plans to build 56 berths ranging from 10,000 to 300,000 tonne capacity each by 2015, including three 300,00-tonne and six 250,000-tonne berths. By 2020, authorities expect 120 berths to be operational in the 10,000-tonne class or larger.
