Cordero reappointed, confirmed to commission

Attorney Mario Cordero has been reappointed to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners by Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, an action that was confirmed earlier this month by the City Council.

The five-seat Harbor Commission is the governing board of the Port of Long Beach, overseeing the Port's major spending and policy decisions.

Cordero, who is currently the Commission's Vice President, contributed to the development of the pioneering Green Port Policy, which commits the Port to environmental stewardship and sustainability. He served as Commission President in 2007-2008.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Gardena, Cordero moved to Long Beach in 1974. A practicing attorney specializing in workers' compensation law, Cordero has a law degree from the University of Santa Clara and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from California State University, Long Beach.

The Mexican-American Bar Association named him Attorney of the Year in 2007, and he received an environmental award that same year from the League of California Cities.

First appointed in June 2003 by then-Mayor Beverly O';Neill, Cordero, 56, is now beginning his second six-year term on the commission. Harbor Commissioners can serve up to two six-year terms.
