Jul 21, 2009 Port

THE Port of St Petersburg has completed the design for a refrigerated terminal to be developed on the First Stevedoring Company site with annual capacity of 1.5 million tons.

But progress comes with a decrease of 23 per cent in cargo throughput at the port during the first half of the year to 22.6 million tonnes, including 4.73 million tonnes handled in June, a decrease of 14 per cent year-on-year.

In the first half, transshipments of dry bulk declined 26 per cent compared to the same period last year to 3.5 million tonnes. General cargo volume fell by 30 per cent to 5.4 million tonnes, while container cargo plummeted by 32 per cent to 6.4 million tonnes, according to figures provided by St Petersburg-based Portnews news agency.

The conceptual design calls for new reefer capacities for the storage of vegetables, fruits, bananas and deep-frozen products on the site of the first cargo area within the Greater Port of St Petersburg.
