UK holds Rotterdam Rules consultation

The Department for Transport in the UK has set up a Consultative Working Group to consider the impact of these Rules should the UK decide to sign the same and ultimately ratify them. According to law firm Pysden Solicitors the purpose of the Group is to obtain expert input in an attempt to reach some conclusions before the issue is put out for general consultation.
The Working Group will: Operate under “Chatham House Rules” (meaning that the views of particular participants cannot be identified). Meet as often as is necessary to achieve its aim and on dates convenient for the majority. Provide an objective and impartial forum for discussions between all interested parties. Ensure the views of all parties are considered carefully and equally. Ascertain and report on the views of, and actions being taken by, the other leading maritime nations. Investigate the benefits or otherwise of the Rotterdam Rules to interested parties and the UK as a whole. Continue to review membership of the group to ensure all interested parties are suitably represented. Continue to meet until Ministers decide on concluded policy in relation to the aims of the Group as a result of the work of the Group or otherwise. Aim to reach at least common agreement on the way forward, so far as possible, before the signing ceremony in Rotterdam on 23 September 2009
Pysden says that membership of the group is currently comprised of representatives from The Chamber of Shipping, Freight Transport Association, BIFA, Road Haulage Association, P&I clubs, British Maritime Law Association and Commodities Traders plus a number of independent Maritime Lawyers and representatives of the Banking and Insurance sectors.
