Northlink bars Orkney meat: maggots

Jun 29, 2009 Port

SCOTLAND’S Northlink Ferries has reportedly barred meat from the Orkney Meat Co because of a maggot infestation.

“Maggot spillage has been an ongoing problem for some time, and until Orkney Meat can resolve it, we cannot permit their trailers to travel with us,” a Nortklink spokesman told the Aberdeen Press & Journal.

Orkney Meat has already tackled the problem of maggots in its meat products by spending £60,000 ($96,000) modifying its containers in line with Northlink and MCA recommendations.

The company said the ban will hinder operations and also “possibly put jobs at risk.” Orkney Meat is now looking at alternative ways to transport waste products, including talking to a competing operator.
