New Port Access Ramp to Benefit Tampa Port Authority

Jun 26, 2009 Port

The Florida Department of Transportation plans to build a dedicated truck ramp from the Port of Tampa to the interstate as part of a $600 million Interstate 4 – Crosstown Expressway Connector project that has been fast-tracked as a result of the federal stimulus program.

“We are delighted that the I-4 Connector has received the green light as this project fits perfectly with our container terminal expansion currently underway,” said Richard Wainio, port director and chief executive. The project should be finished in late 2014, to coincide with the completion of the Panama Canal expansion.

The Tampa Port Authority is adding another 14.5 acres of paved storage, bringing the total container terminal area to 40 acres. The port and terminal operator Ports America plan to build out the terminal to more than 160 acres over the next several years.
