Hong Kong eco-study on container terminal impact launched

Jun 19, 2009 Port

HONG KONG transport secretary Eva Cheng announced the launch of the preliminary study and environmental impact of the planned expansion at Southwest Tsing Yi container terminal.

The study has been pushed ahead in light of the 20 per cent slowdown in container volumes for the first four months of the year because "advance works would have to be undertaken for developing a new container terminal and it would take time to comply with the statutory requirements."

Hong Kong cargo throughput will be watched closely for any changes following its drop from 2008 throughput of 24.5 million TEU so as to calculate "optimal timing for providing the new berths" at a provisional location currently in use as an oil and gas storage base.
