ASIA Airfreight Terminal Co Ltd (AAT) cargo throughput at Hong Kong airport declined 31 per cent year on year in April to 36,416 tonnes, the company has announced.
Export cargo registered 23,438 tonnes, a decrease of 35 per cent when compared with the same month last year. Import cargo volume for April was 12,525 tonnes, registering a decline of 22 per cent. Transshipment cargo was 453 tonnes, down 42 per cent against last year's comparable volume.
Cumulative tonnage from January to April was 143,177 tonnes, representing a year-on-year decrease of 28 per cent. Accumulated export cargo volume was 91,678 tonnes, down 31 per cent while import cargo volume was 50,160 tonnes, down 24 per cent. Transshipment volume for first four months was 1,339 tonnes, down six per cent against same period last year.
When the market will turn around remains to be seen. AAT is taking this unwanted opportunity to re-engineer operations and prepare for the cargo recovery, said AAT general manager Nelson Lee.
