Enormous benefit for fleets

Apr 21, 2009 Logistics

Goodyear, one of the world’s largest tire manufacturers, has launched a new 495/45R22.5 Omnitrac MSD super single truck tire for use in mixed service applications to increase the vehicle’s payload capacity.
The brand-new Goodyear 495/45R22.5 Omnitrac MSD is a wide drive tire that replaces the standard dual wheel configuration with a single wheel fitment. It is specially designed for use in mixed service applications that are becoming more and more common in modern urbanization and infrastructure projects.
The total weight saving on a bogey vehicle using four 495/45R22.5 Omnitrac MSD super single truck tires on alloy rims instead of eight 315/80R22.5 MSD tires totals an impressive 260kg.
Vehicle types that will typically benefit the most from the new Goodyear product are concrete mixers, bulk transport trucks, and other models where every kilo saved on the empty vehicle is a kilo gained on the payload. Used for the shuttle service in a major building project, the additional 260kg payload offered by the new Goodyear super single drive tires will reduce substantially the overall number of trips required, and thus the fleet’s total cost. Fewer drive cycles will also reduce the overall fuel consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and the overall impact of the construction works – additional benefits for the environment, the fleets and the population.
The 495/45R22.5 Omnitrac MSD has a tread design dedicated to the typical needs of the mixed service usage.
It combines a high mileage with the traction performance and damage resistance of an Omnitrac mixed service tire. The shape of the grooves and blocks ensures excellent self cleaning properties while the arrangement of the tread blocks provides low noise levels.
The tire cavity shape is designed to give a uniform pressure distribution all over the surface in contact with the ground in order to improve the tire’s wear profile and traction performance. The silica tread compound shows an excellent wet performance and its shoulder block bridges ensure robustness in more severe applications as well as good driving stability and handling.
Goodyear will offer retreaded tires to provide the best economical package throughout the complete carcass life. The new Goodyear 495/45R22.5 Omnitrac MSD is also fully regroovable.
“The data collected from a comprehensive set of demanding tests confirmed our high expectations: The new Goodyear super single tire significantly improves the profitability of a vehicle – without compromising safety, mobility, or the accessibility of sites,” said Juergen Spielmann, Director Technology Commercial Tires, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Goodyear has partnered with Renault Trucks and introduces this new tire on a dedicated chassis set-up which confirms the industrial interest in this new innovative tire product.
The tire’s features and benefits are:
– wide tread for high mileage and excellent traction
– continuously widening groove width towards shoulder edge for better self-cleaning
– shoulder block edge offset for better mud traction
– stiff block design for higher damage prevention
– optimized pitching sequence for lower noise
– shoulder humps for improved robustness and handling
– open tread design with optimized block taper angles to prevent stone picking
– new tread compound for more mileage and higher tear and cut resistance
– silica tread compound for an improved wet braking performance
– multi-radius tread contour for better contact pressure distribution
