Schneider picked as DHS deputy

President Bush on Tuesday nominated Paul Schneider to be deputy secretary of homeland security until the end of the administration's term in January.

Schneider, undersecretary for management, would fill the post left open by last fall's departure of Michael Jackson.

The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
