Nord-Flyg, AFC team up on handling Germany-Spain air freight

Apr 3, 2009 Logistics

THE German specialist for air freight consolidation Air Freight Consolidator (AFC) has signed a one-year contract with Swedish airline Nord-Flyg Madrid to provide airlift for cargo between Germany, Benelux and Spain in an agreement that aims to boost air freight volumes handled by both sides.

Nord-Flyg will operate the flight route with the Dash8-Q400, which will connect the airports of Maastricht (MST) in The Netherlands and Germany's Weeze (NRN) airport via the Baden-Airpark (FKB) in Southern Germany with the Spanish airport Madrid-Barajas (MAD), starting from April 6.

The Bombardier Dash 8-Q400F is said to be the world's first cargo-version of the short- and middle range airplane that offers a high flight speed as a Turboprop-airplane and can carry in its 80-metre-cubed freight compartment up to nine tons of air cargo.

This contract is highly important for us, as customer satisfaction is our main aim in business. This connection is a fundamental addition to the European logistics network to Spain and vice versa, said managing director of AFC, Ernst Gschnitzer.

A statement issued by AFC said the flight network for this service enables customers of AFC to handover the cargo late in the evening - the Spanish logistics partner will distribute until 0800 hrs the following morning throughout the Iberian Peninsula. This connection is the first project with a European-wide network to follow in the future. This is expected to enable AFC to access end customers in any European country within a few hours.

Nord-Flyg was established in 1952 as a passenger- and cargo-airline but in 1997 the main focus switched to the cargo business. From January 2009 the airline is enlarging its fleet with the ultra modern high speed Dash8-Q400F turboprop aircraft by manufacturer Bombardier. Nord-Flyg is planning to bring further Q400F into service during 2009/2010. So far, Air Freight Consolidator has signed a letter of intent for one of these aircrafts.
