Taiwan's Taoyuan Airport January cargo volume falls to new low

Mar 25, 2009 Logistics

TAIWAN Taoyuan International Airport's cargo throughput dropped to a new record low of 72,200 tonnes in January due to the gloomy world economy, which was less than half the monthly volume when prosperous, according to figures from Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration.

Taoyuan Airport's cargo volume figure is an index of the rise and fall of Taiwan's air cargo industry, said the report from Logistics Week. In 2004, the airport's annual cargo throughput was 1.83 million tonnes, which means 150,000 tonnes every month on average. It fell to 1.71 million tonnes in 2007, and then slid again to 1.59 million tonnes in 2008. The throughput in December 2008 was only 85,200 tonnes, which for the first time fell below the 100,000-tonne level.
