TI Group wins large UK insulation order

Feb 25, 2009 Logistics

Ticon Insulation Ltd UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of TI Marine Contracting and part of Wilhelmsen Ships Equipment has won an order with Babcock International on behalf of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) to deliver insulation systems for two aircraft carriers being built for the Royal Navy. The value of the contract is approximately GBP 57 million (NOK 600 million).
Ticon Insulation Ltd UK is established in Glasgow and will deliver insulation, linings and deck covering aboard the "HMS Queen Elizabeth" and the "HMS Prince of Wales." Construction of the two aircraft carriers has already begun with pre-fabrication of steel at the Appledore Shipyard in North Devon and will continue with the first cut of steel in the main ACA yards later in 2009.
The Aircraft Carrier Alliance is an alliance between the UK MoD, BVT Surface Fleet, BAE SYSTEMS, Thales UK and Babcock. The Aircraft Carriers which are due to enter service with the Royal Navy in the next decade are the largest and most powerful surface warships ever built in the UK. Each of the ships is 280 metres in length and displaces approximately 65,000 tons. The vessels will be built in modules, four main modules per vessel and at various UK shipyards. Final assembly will be performed at Babcock's dockyard in Rosyth, near Edinburgh.
During the peak work period, Ticon will employ 300 - 350 persons on the project. Mr Svein Mikalsen, managing director of TI Marine Contracting states that this agreement caps several years of successful work with UK shipyards: The competition for this agreement was intense, but Ticon has a long track record of quality deliveries and is also competitive on price. We are totally committed to fulfilling our promises to the customer.
Sean Donaldson, Project Director for Babcock states, "Delivering the Aircraft Carriers will be a great challenge for the UK shipbuilding industry, however utilising Contractors such as Ticon helps to de-risk the programme due to the company's extensive experience within the UK market."
