FedEx Freight plans to lay off 900 truck drivers and dockworkers at 150 terminals in its regional less-than-truckload operation, according to hometown newspapers in Memphis, Tenn.
FedEx President Doug Duncan notified employees of the action last week via e-mail, the Memphis Business Journal said.
Some workers may be subject to call back within 90 days and others will be eligible to transfer elsewhere within FedEx Freight, a spokesman told the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Duncan said in his note that gains in market share have not been enough to offset deep reductions in customer volumes.
In December, FedEx Freight and National LTL eliminated more than 500 jobs as part of a wider corporate cost-cutting initiative.
Other LTL carriers are also scaling back operations in response to weak traffic volumes.
