Cargo volume at Rickenbacker Airport fell 9 percent in 2008, a result of a sluggish economy and its resultant effect on air freight, the airport said Monday.
The multimodal cargo airport saw 199.8 million tons of cargo in 2008, compared to 220.5 million in 2007. It’s the second straight year of declining volume for the Columbus, Ohio, airport. In 2006, the airport handled 250.7 millions tons.
“The decline in cargo activity is also expected to negatively impact 2009,” said David Whitaker, the airport’s vice president of business development.
